Administrator Power traveled to Kenya and Somalia to address the historic drought in the region causing acute food insecurity for millions. She heard from farmers and families suffering from the devastating impacts of the drought and met with partners scaling up to meet growing needs. Administrator Power traveled to India to meet with government leaders, the private sector, and agriculture experts to advance USAID’s work. She held a town hall with the U.S. Embassy and USAID staff to reflect on 75 years of the U.S.-India diplomatic partnership. USAID announced an additional $74 million in humanitarian assistance to support the Ukrainian people affected by Russia’s unprovoked war. This brings the total amount of humanitarian aid from USAID to Ukraine to more than $1 billion, which has already reached 11 million Ukrainians. Deputy Administrator Coleman met with Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali to discuss how to expand work in food security, climate change, and more.
Administrator Power delivered an address on the growing global food security crisis and how USAID is scaling response efforts to save lives.
She shared new USAID investments to meet growing needs, including Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food to fight child malnutrition. USAID announced $1.3 billion in surge humanitarian and development aid to the Horn of Africa, a region facing an unprecedented drought. New funding will meet urgent needs to stave off famine, health support to prevent disease outbreaks, and long-term agricultural resilience. Administrator Power joined United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield to testify before the Senate Foreign Relation’s Committee. She shared how USAID is leveraging U.S. Government support to quickly mobilize urgent food relief to impacted regions. First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska met with Administrator Power to discuss ongoing humanitarian needs across Ukraine amidst Putin’s war. USAID announced new funding to Ukraine this week to provide urgent aid to communities in need and to support agriculture resilience.
USAID provided an additional $1.7 billion to the Government of Ukraine for direct budgetary support to alleviate the acute budget deficit. This funding will respond to critical needs such as paying the salaries of healthcare workers and other essential services. USAID delivered 33,600 U.S.-donated pediatric COVID-19 doses to Bhutan. These vaccines will help Bhutan safeguard children and families against COVID-19. USAID Chief Scientist Dr. Ticora V. Jones hosted a seminar “Feeding the Future with Insects” based on research by World Bank partners. She spoke with experts on the myriad of benefits insect farming provides to mitigate hunger and increase food security. USAID, alongside the United Kingdom, signed a new partnership that will support the Central Bank of Yemen to strengthen their economy.
Administrator Power delivered a speech, “A Global Revolution of Dignity,” calling on the world to unite behind democracy. She shared how USAID is reinventing the playbook to fight corruption and strengthen global democracy. At a USAID-hosted food security event at the Summit of the Americas, Administrator Power announced $331 million to address food security. This new funding will meet immediate and long-term food security needs in the Latin America and the Caribbean region. USAID’s Anti-Corruption Task Force traveled to Madagascar to discuss USAID’s continued support for anti-corruption efforts. In one week, USAID’s humanitarian partners sent over 1,100 trucks to Tigray with essential items like food and medicine. As the humanitarian situation in Tigray remains dire, USAID and partners continue working to surge critical support.
President Biden announced that USAID is providing $225+ million in additional humanitarian assistance to Ukraine amidst Russia’s war. This funding will provide lifesaving humanitarian food assistance, safe drinking water, shelter assistance, and more to people inside Ukraine. Global Health lead Atul Gawande traveled to Accra, Ghana to meet with local partners working with USAID on health initiatives. They discussed the most pressing health issues in Ghana, including child and maternal health, HIV/AIDS, and vaccinating 22.9 million people by the end of 2023. Administrator Power spoke to members of the U.S. Global Leadership. Coalition at the 2022 Global Impact Forum. She highlighted USAID’s work on the food security crisis caused by COVID-19, climate change, and Russia’s war on Ukraine. Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman traveled to Switzerland to attend the 53rd annual Tidewater meeting. She shared how USAID is working to maximize the impact of development assistance and improve adaptability to humanitarian crises.
