For over 50 years, USAID’s global health programs have saved lives, protected people most vulnerable to disease, and promoted the stability of communities and nations, while advancing American security and prosperity. America is safer and stronger when people can live healthy and productive lives and when nations around the world are self-reliant and resilient.

USAID’s global health efforts, grounded in investments in health systems strengthening and breakthrough innovation, are focused around three strategic priorities: Preventing child and maternal deaths; controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic; and combating infectious diseases. Since 1986, USAID's HIV/AIDS program has been on the forefront of the global AIDS crisis, providing strategic direction, leadership, and expertise to help control one of the world’s most serious public health challenges.

In an increasingly interconnected society, a health threat anywhere is a threat everywhere. For decades, USAID has been a leader in the fight against infectious diseases, including malaria, through the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative; HIV/AIDS, through PEPFAR; tuberculosis; neglected tropical diseases; pandemic influenza, and other global health security challenges.

MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH

In 2019, USAID and its partners…
•   Helped 84 million women and children access essential—and often life-saving—health services.
•   Helped protect 94 million people by distributing over 47 million mosquito nets through the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative.
•   Supported over 27 million children with nutrition programs.
•   Reached more than 24 million women and couples with voluntary family planning services.

 

HIV/AIDS

In 2019, through PEPFAR, USAID and its partners…
•   Supported testing for more than 79.6 million people and life-saving antiretroviral (ARV) treatment for more than 15.7 million people.
•   Enabled more than 2.6 million babies of HIV-infected mothers to be born HIV-free.
•   Supported training for more than 280,000 healthcare workers to deliver HIV and health services.
•   Provided care and support for nearly 6.3 million orphans, vulnerable children, and their families.

 

INFECTIOUS DISEASES

In 2018, USAID with its partners…
•   Detected 4,600,000 cases of tuberculosis and started 98,435 patients on critical treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis.
•   Leveraged $3.2 billion in drug donations for more than 268 million treatments to control and eliminate neglected tropical diseases like lymphatic filariasis and blinding trachoma.
•   From 2014 to 2018, supported the discovery of over 900 new viruses in more than 30 countries to help prevent outbreaks before they start.
