USAID is deploying a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to lead the U.S. government’s response efforts.
This elite team, comprising disaster experts from USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, is assessing the damage, identifying priority needs, and coordinating with humanitarian partners. The DART is also coordinating with the U.S. Embassy in Haiti, as well as other U.S. agencies in the region.
In addition to mobilizing the DART, USAID staff based in the region and Washington, D.C. are monitoring the situation closely, as well as any potential impacts from Tropical Storm Grace which is approaching Haiti.

USAID/BHA partner IOM distributes nearly 38,000 emergency relief commodities to earthquake-affected households. From September 2 to 7, USAID/BHA transports 10,000 plastic sheets and 10,000 shelter repair kits to Port-au-Prince for onward distribution by IOM. DART members continue to conduct site visits in southwestern Haiti, observing a CRS distribution of assistance in Nippes on September 3. WFP-led humanitarian convoys continue to transport assistance from Port-au-Prince to southwestern Haiti amid security risks and infrastructure damage.
During the three weeks since a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti, USAID and the Department of Defense U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) have been urgently working to deliver aid to hard-to-reach areas as quickly as possible. Today, because access to affected communities by land and sea has improved and civilian transportation options—including the UN’s air, truck, and barge services—have become available, we have jointly determined that U.S. military assets are no longer required for air transport and logistic support to the U.S. government humanitarian response. USAID requests for JTF-Haiti to transport relief supplies and personnel to affected areas steadily declined in the last week, and all outstanding requests were completed as of September 2. USAID will continue to lead the U.S. response to the earthquake to deliver food, shelter, health and other urgent assistance to hard-hit communities.
USAID/BHA delivers emergency medical kits sufficient to treat approximately 20,000 people for three months to Port-au-Prince for onward distribution by PAHO. DART members conduct assessments and observe distributions of assistance in Grand’Anse, Nippes, and Sud, identifying urgent health and WASH needs. USAID/BHA releases a total of approximately 1,747 MT of contingency food commodities to WFP, enabling the UN agency to provide food assistance to 65,000 people for two months. JTF-Haiti conducts 661 missions, assisting nearly 480 people and transporting approximately 574,000 pounds of relief commodities to affected areas.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is continuing to get critical aid to Haitians impacted by the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck southwestern Haiti on August 14 by transporting additional relief items and medical supplies to Haiti.
