BAKU - Mr. Michael Nehrbass assumed his position as the new Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Azerbaijan.

Prior to being named Mission Director, Mr. Nehrbass served as Deputy Mission Director in Pakistan. Prior to joining USAID/Pakistan, he oversaw stabilization, economic growth, and democracy and governance activities for USAID/Iraq. Mr. Nehrbass joined USAID as a Foreign Service Officer in 2001. He has served in Afghanistan, Angola, Georgia, Guatemala, Indonesia, Iraq, and in USAID’s Africa Bureau in Washington.

Mr. Nehrbass has a master’s degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College, a Master’s degree in international relations from the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, and an undergraduate degree in folklore from the University of California at Berkeley.

U.S. Ambassador Opens USAID and IOM Training for First Responders on Identification of Victims of Trafficking

Yesterday morning, U.S. Ambassador Litzenberger launched a Training for First Responders on Identification of Victims of Trafficking hosted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).  The three-day training, which is part of USAID’s “Countering Trafficking in Persons Activity,” provides attendees with additional skills and knowledge concerning the detection, identification, and referral of victims of trafficking, forced labor, and exploitation.  

USAID and the Small and Medium Business Development Agency Sign Memorandum of Understanding

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission in Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan Small and Medium Business Development Agency (SMBDA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding today to support development of the business environment for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). By working together, USAID and SMBDA will support reforms that promote a more competitive and favorable business environment, allowing local SMEs to increase yields, quality, and diversify their sales markets, leading to higher incomes and resiliency from economic crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. 

United States Provides an Additional $1 Million for COVID-19 Response in Azerbaijan

Today, U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Lee Litzenberger participated in the delivery of three mobile clinics in Shamakhi which will provide essential health services to rural and vulnerable Azerbaijani communities. These mobile clinics will serve thousands of people in Shamakhi and surrounding villages every year by helping with early diagnosis of preventable diseases, bringing treatment to underserved rural communities, and saving lives. The mobile clinics were procured by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the British Embassy in Baku under the PROACT-Care project implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO) Azerbaijan. 

USAID Hosts Summit to Promote Women’s Entrepreneurship in Azerbaijan

USAID announced the creation of the first ever Women’s National Business Agenda (WNBA) during a summit held today in Baku. The WNBA will serve as a private sector-led platform for innovative policy recommendations that increases women’s participation in commerce.

The United States and Israeli Embassies in Baku are excited to announce the launch of an innovative collaboration with Azerbaijan State Agricultural University (ASAU) to develop Azerbaijan’s agricultural potential.
