Today, Administrator Samantha Power hosted a roundtable of civil society activists and experts from eastern Ukraine to hear directly about their experiences working in areas currently facing a further Russian invasion.

Administrator Power thanked participants for their tireless commitment to supporting Ukrainian citizens living in Luhansk and Donetsk, where Russia’s aggressive military activities continued unabated for eight years and escalated in recent days. Participants shared their experiences living and working in conflict-affected areas, as well as how they expect civil society to adapt and respond to further intensification of Russian military action. The group discussed their efforts to facilitate communications across all parts of Ukrainian society to share essential safety and readiness information, as well as attempts to ramp up civil defense mechanisms to prepare for further conflict. The conversation also highlighted the unique experiences of young people who have lived much of their lives under the shadow of conflict.

Administrator Power expressed her deep respect for the work civil society leaders continue to do to defend the vision of a democratic, free, and independent Ukraine and to keep their communities safe from harm. She pledged ongoing support from USAID to the Ukrainian people regardless of what actions Russia takes, and the group agreed to stay in close contact to facilitate U.S. support in the event of further aggression.
