Global Health

USAID supports Guinea’s national health policy with an emphasis on community participation, accountability, and transparency in order to improve access, quality, and demand for health services. The USAID-funded Health Service Delivery activity is providing high quality family planning and maternal, newborn and child health services for a healthier Guinean population.

USAID’s support through the  Global Health Security Agenda is helping to build a health system that is prepared to respond to public health threats, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ebola outbreak in 2021.

Through the President’s Malaria Initiative, USAID is strengthening health system leadership and governance, strategic information exchange, decision making, drug quality, and supply chain management. The Government of Guinea through the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) works with StopPalu+, a USAID-supported activity, to deliver proven, effective interventions to those at risk of malaria. This has helped the NMCP achieve major milestones, including three universal coverage campaigns with long-lasting insecticide-treated nets, adequate supply of artemisinin-based combination therapies, the rollout of rapid diagnostic tests, and a significant decrease of the prevalence of malaria in children under five years of age.

Democracy, Human Rights and Governance

Despite the current complex political landscape, the Government of Guinea is making progress to implement decentralization reforms and this has created opportunities for USAID’s support for democratic reforms at the grassroots level.  USAID’s Building Electoral and Accountability Capacities, Orderly Norms, and Democratic Governance activity works to strengthen civil society and media capacities to foster fact-based and issue-oriented discourse and train newly elected officials in representing constituent interests.  The Cultural Cohesion for Peace and Prosperity activity works to promote peaceful coexistence among groups in conflict and to promote sustainable relationships in the target communities by strengthening social cohesion.

The Strengthening Democratic Control and Budget Transparency activity improves transparency by increasing the ability of government officials and the public to access and understand government budget information.

Economic Growth

USAID/Guinea is engaging with the private sector at the local level to advance economic opportunities in the country.

USAID and the Anglo Gold Ashanti mining company’s Guinea subsidiary, Société AngloGold Ashanti de Guinée, have partnered to fund the Siguiri Agricultural Development Activity, which uses a private sector-led approach to increase opportunities for communities affected by mining activities in the prefecture of Siguiri. The partnership improves commercial prospects for cashew farmers by building linkages among local cashew market system actors.

The West Africa Energy Program is an integral initiative of Power Africa, a USAID coordinated initiative, that is bringing together technical and legal experts, the private sector, and governments to increase the number of people with access to power in West Africa. The activity seeks to help West Africa expand the supply of and access to affordable and  reliable grid-connected electricity services through technical assistance,  capacity building and transaction support.
