For our part, the U.S. has committed an additional $700 million dollars in development assistance. We are working very closely with the government and our civil society partners to expand USAID programming, to help the country strengthen its health system, develop its agricultural potential, tackle corruption, weather the difficult downsides of putting in place the economic reforms, the near term shocks to the system, through social safety net programs with the World Bank and others, and working with the government to support it as it attempts to bring security forces under civilian control.
On September 24, Administrator Power met with Simon Coveney, Ireland's Minister of Foreign Affairs. The two discussed their shared commitment to combating the climate crisis, responding to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, and advocating for unhindered humanitarian access to the people of Syria. Administrator Power thanked the Foreign Minister for Irish leadership in the UN Security Council to draw attention to the dire humanitarian crisis in northern Ethiopia.
On September 24, Administrator Samantha Power met with Denmark’s Minister for Development Cooperation and Minister for Nordic Cooperation, Flemming Møller Mortensen. They discussed climate finance and adaptation, ending the COVID-19 pandemic, and humanitarian response priorities in Afghanistan and Ethiopia. In addition, they discussed the shared US and Danish commitment to advancing democracy and governance and safeguarding against digital repression around the world through the upcoming Tech for Democracy Summit in Copenhagen and President Biden’s Democracy Summit.
On September 24, Administrator Power met with Mukhtar Tileuberdi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs for Kazakhstan. She acknowledged Kazakhstan's economic progress and congratulated Minister Tileuberdi on the country's thirty years of independence and partnership with USAID. They also discussed a shared commitment to tackling climate change, anti-corruption, food insecurity, human trafficking, and the provision of assistance in Afghanistan.
Today I convened a High-Level Roundtable on Afghanistan with key donors, to discuss humanitarian and development assistance principles and priorities in the country. As I stated at the outset of this frank, wide-ranging discussion, there is no more complex set of issues facing the international donor community.
