We celebrated two major milestones this month. For the first time, a vaccine to prevent malaria was approved for use in young children. USAID has been funding research into this life-saving work for five decades. And, the United States has successfully donated and delivered 200 million COVID-19 vaccines to more than 100 countries around the world. USAID is continuing to work on the ambitious goal of vaccinating 70% of the world by next year. Speaking of milestones, there’s another coming up in just a few days: our 60th anniversary. Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook to join the celebration. On our birthday Nov. 3, we plan to highlight historical accomplishments from our Agency and partner countries, and look at where our work is heading in the future.

USAID is providing $26 million in additional humanitarian aid to help people affected by the ongoing conflict in northern Ethiopia. Administrator Samantha Power met with civil society leaders, government officials, business leaders, and youth during a visit to the Dominican Republic. And we celebrated World Food Day and International Day of the Girl this month.

Collaborating with USAID
USAID signed a first-of-its-kind agreement with Delaware State University to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the international development workforce. The two institutions committed to working together on research into agriculture-led economic growth, resilience, nutrition, and water security.

Every dollar we invest in climate adaptation and preparedness over the next decade will yield at least THREE times the return in net benefits. Today’s investments are already paying off. In the Philippines, one of the most disaster-prone countries on the planet, USAID has helped over 1.8 million people gain access to safe drinking water—taking on both issues of water security and climate resilience. USAID will play an integral role in the upcoming U.N. Climate Change Conference, or COP26, where Administrator Power will join other U.S. and international leaders and where USAID will reaffirm our commitments to fight climate change and highlight our role in implementing these actions globally.
