Today at COP27, USAID Administrator Samantha Power reaffirmed USAID’s commitment to the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate) initiative, highlighting another installment of $43 million in line with AIM for Climate objectives. This investment will advance innovations for climate smart food systems to protect the yield and quality of crops and livestock from climate change, such as climate-responsive dryland grasses that can withstand reduced rainfall and improved maize varieties that produce higher yields in harsher conditions.

Today in Beirut, Administrator Samantha Power announced USAID will provide $50 million for Lebanese and refugee students living in the country to attend the American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanese American University (LAU), and Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU).

Today at COP27, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a suite of programs and targets to increase private investment in climate solutions and make progress on its COP26 commitment to mobilize $150 billion in climate finance by 2030. USAID is focusing on funding the most urgent needs in partner countries through expanding access to climate finance and increasing the number of financial institutions making climate investments.

Today, Administrator Samantha Power concluded her first full day of a multi-day visit to Lebanon. Following her arrival yesterday afternoon, she visited the National Museum of Beirut and learned about the government’s efforts to preserve Lebanon’s world-renowned cultural antiquities.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced 15 grants to higher education institutions to analyze the impacts of COVID-19 in eight countries around the globe. Selected researchers from USAID partner countries will receive awards of up to $70,000 each – for a total of over $870,000 in funding – and partner with scientists funded by other U.S. government agencies. South Africa’s Department of Science and Innovation co-funded five of the 15 COVID-19 research grants to additionally support these grantees.

Today in West Beqaa, Lebanon, Administrator Samantha Power announced $8.5 million in funding for Lebanon that will support 22 new solar-powered water pumping projects in Lebanon. These projects, which will be completed over the next two years, will serve more than 150 towns and villages and benefit over half a million Lebanese citizens and refugees by providing reliable access to water and decreasing operating costs and dependence on fuel to those who desperately need it.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing more than $72 million in emergency food assistance to more than 650,000 vulnerable people in Lebanon, including refugees from Syria and other countries.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing an additional $25 million to support vulnerable people in Ukraine during the harsh winter. Ongoing attacks by Russian forces on critical infrastructure and housing in Ukraine have undermined the civilian population’s ability to survive cold winter temperatures, which are expected to increase humanitarian needs, particularly among those living in damaged housing or who have fled due to conflict.

This also has a negative impact on the millions of refugees Lebanon graciously continues to host.

Today, Administrator Samantha Power signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to renew and expand collaboration on global scientific and technological solutions over the next five years.
