The global mpox outbreak and an Ebola outbreak in Uganda are just two of the most recent examples of how the risks and impact of emerging infectious diseases are increasing daily, and how global systems remain ill-equipped to identify and contain these threats. Every outbreak carries the risk of spreading regionally or globally, impacting health, economies, and societies.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announces the launch of the second phase of its Environmental Restoration of the Aral Sea activity. USAID will provide up to $1.6 million, subject to the availability of funds, to expand the project from Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan, which will improve resilience to the adverse effects of desertification in the Aral Sea region by growing new forests.
